Global Finalist Profile

“Mi Terro is the world’s first synthetic biology and advanced material company that utilizes big data to create home compostable, single-use plastic-alternative packaging materials made from plant-based agricultural waste – a first-of-its-kind approach.”

The Problem

Globally, humans are estimated to use over 300 billion polybags and single-use, resealable sandwich and storage bags (SRPBs) every year. These bags are almost impossible to recycle — they end up in landfills or on the ground and in our ocean.

• Plastic films make up 5 million metric tons of ocean leakage, or a full 46% of all ocean plastic leakage.

• It is estimated that there are 14 million metric tons of plastic on the ocean floor today that will be nearly impossible to extract.

• 11 million metric tons of new plastic enters the ocean every year. That number is expected to almost triple to 29 million metric tons by 2040.

The Solution

Mi Terro’s proprietary technology re-engineers agricultural waste into plastic-alternative packaging material. Our packaging film is monolayer, already 20-40% cheaper than other bio-based materials (PLA, PHA, PBAT) at pilot level, home compostable, ocean degradable, heat sealable, and excellent water and oxygen barrier.

Mi Terro successfully replicated the structures found on spider silk by using spent grain protein, a protein with a completely different composition. Because all proteins are made of polypeptide chains, under the right conditions, plant proteins can be caused to self-assemble just like spider silk.
